Ella Hookings shares her thoughts on working with the youth at Crown:

For the past eight months I have been working for Crown doing a post-uni gap year called Frontiers Project Impact, or FP for short. I have been part of the Crown Debt Advice team and have led the Sunday mornings youth work called CGI. The aim of this article is to give you a peek into the world of CGI.

I was asked to join the CGI team in 2010 during my second year of university and was really apprehensive to start with because I thought I was rubbish with kids and teenagers just wouldn’t get me. But I threw myself in and once I got to know the group I started to really enjoyed it. It has given me the opportunity to develop my relationship with God through the preparation of talks and fellowship with other leaders. The youth within the group are such an encouragement to me. Every time I’m at one of the sessions they surprise me, sometimes with an insight into the passage that I have not thought of, they can guide the meetings without even realising it. It is also encouraging to see some of the members dragging parents along to church because they want to come and some even coming without their parents being at the church. This is a great bunch of young people and it’s a pleasure to serve them.

The group is currently about ten members and we are expecting some growth in September as some more youth come up from younger groups. I am also praying for more members to come from outside the church and for more leaders as the team will be reduced in numbers with the end of the University year.

The question I get asked most often about CGI is, ‘what does it stand for?!’ The answer, ‘Cephas Generation Incorporated’, inevitably leads to more questions or a quizzical look followed by quick movement in a different direction; I have to admit, my first reaction was similar to this!

The reason the 11-14’s Sunday Morning Youth work is called Cephas Generation Incorporated is that a prophetic verse was given when the youth was started up. The verse was 1 Peter 2:9. That they are a generation (“a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession”) called out of darkness, to declare his praises (both in worship and evangelism). These young people are the next generation of apostles, prophets, evangelists and pastors (Eph 4:11). Therefore, we are about building up young people to be the generation who will take on foundational roles in the continued growth of the Church; just as is said to Peter (also known as Cephas) in Matthew 16:18:

“And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

Our vision for the CGI group is to grow in number and faith, helping the youth and leaders to have a deeper relationship with God. Our aim is that the youth will grow in faith and be inspired to invite friends, talk to classmates and teachers about Jesus, and live their life for Christ. We engage in really practical and helpful discussions about how this can be done and how we can enjoy a life with Christ. We also love to have fun and share testimonies of what God is doing in our lives.

Over the past two and a half years it has been a pleasure to serve the youth at Crown, I am so glad that I got involved. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead and continuing to learn from the group!
