  • Jesus Is Back!

When you listen to some messages, it can be like having a broken headlamp replaced or a new wiper blade fitted; important, but afterwards it can feel like not much has changed. Then there are messages that feel like you've had a whole new engine fitted. The first installment of Terry Virgo's duo of talks on the Holy Spirit at the Ashburnham conference last weekend was the latter.

Terry unfurls Jesus’ teaching on His departure and the Holy Spirit’s arrival in a vivid and fresh way. One of the standout moments for me was when he addressed a passage in John 14 that we often read at funerals because we assume that Jesus is talking about His second coming and entering into eternity with Him. Terry suggests that Jesus was also intending people to understand this passage as talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost; that though Jesus was physically going away, we can still be with Him each day by spending time with the Holy Spirit; that Jesus has prepared a room for us in His Father’s house where we can meet with Him whenever we want:

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. (John 14:2-3)

There is a beautiful simplicity to the Christian life that we can so easily miss in our tendency to complicate. With the Holy Spirit within us, we can wake up each day with the same excitement that Jesus first followers must had, “Yesterday was awesome; what have You got in store for today?!”
