  • Inherited

It’s day three of our week of prayer. Each day I’ll be posting some reflections on Ephesians chapters 1-3 to lay the foundations for our preaching series this term in Ephesians chapter 4. I hope the entry today encourages you!

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, (Eph 1:18)

Most of the time we read about inheritance in the Bible, the focus is on what we will receive. It’s good to remember, though, that the Bible isn’t primarily about us; it’s about God, and in this verse the inheritance mentioned is God’s—what He is looking forward to receiving in the future.

Paul prays that the eyes of the Ephesian believers’ hearts will be opened to see the hope that is in the riches of God’s inheritance—His ‘holy people’. This was a term God regularly used of the people of Israel in the Old Testament period. After Jesus, this term is used to describe everyone who has responded in faith to the gospel.

Inheritance. God speaks of humans so warmly, so intimately. He gives people such value. The word ‘inheritance’ gives us such confidence in His feelings towards us and assurance that He won’t change His mind when it gets to the end.

Praise God who gives out such abundant value and hope!
