As part of our Impact gap year with Crown, Hannah D’Souza and I have been able to start volunteering at Guiding Lights, the new Drop-In Centre in Uxbridge.

Guiding Lights is a Churches Together initiative made up of volunteers from Hillingdon churches; Christ Church, St. Margaret’s, Crown Church and St. Andrews.
Held in Christ Church’s Watts Hall on Wednesdays from 10am to 12:30pm, we offer a safe place and listening ears for people to come if they need help or support; or even for them to just sit and have a tea/coffee and a chat.

Hannah and I weren’t sure what to expect on our first week, as we’d never done anything like this before. But we really wanted to get involved with volunteering in our community and this has turned out to be the perfect opportunity for us.

We provide information and refer people to services such as Foodbank, Alcoholics Anonymous and CAMHS. We also help with reading/filling in forms.
It has been running since the beginning of May and we’ve had the privilege of serving and supporting several visitors.
After the first—on the 5th of May, one volunteer told me about a visitor who had battled social anxiety to visit us:

“...it was great to be there for him for a good chat and some very welcome coffee and toast…We both (volunteers) found it quite emotional and very rewarding at the thought that he hadn’t given up but kept forging his way down to see us, and afterwards seemed to leave at least somewhat encouraged.”

If you are interested in receiving some support from Guiding Lights, or would like to volunteer with us, please call Sue at 01895 812194 or email guidinglights25@gmail.com, we would love to be in contact with you.
