I remember the first day I moved into halls on campus. It was scary! New place, new people, new everything. At times it felt overwhelming and isolating. There may be times when you hear someone in the kitchen and so wait 5 minutes before you make your Pot Noodle (other instant foods are available), but I encourage you to not be afraid. Embrace university, relax and have fun!

If I’m honest, I regret not making the most of my first year and the more I talk to people about theirs, the more I realise I’m not alone. Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast and I’m really looking forward to continue into my second year, however if I could do last year again I would:

    1. Not worry about the small things
    2. Join more societies
    3. Stock up on tissues (freshers’ flu lasts an age)
    4. Eat less pizza!

In the beginning simple tasks like making dinner can feel like a nuisance, and when the work load starts to get tough and you have deadlines left, right and center, it’s important to remember that God is in charge and should be at the center of everything we do.  It’s so important to stay focused on Him, our cornerstone, when life is so changeable.

Finding a church you feel comfortable in should be one of the main points in your to-do list. I am so grateful I did, and I know I would’ve really struggled if I hadn’t. Church isn’t just about worship and teaching, it’s also about fellowship and support in your faith and life. It’s great to know you have people around to help and guide you.

Finally, if you’re worried about making friends, don’t! Finding a church is great for meeting people as well as drawing closer to God. I would also advise you to join societies on campus. Clubs and societies love new members, they’re great for making friends in a new social environment while also being a great place to show the love of Jesus to others. It’s never too late to join so don’t worry if you didn’t sign up in freshers’ week!

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you may go.”
