    Comfort

SO THE CHURCH THROUGHOUT ALL JUDEA AND GALILEE AND SAMARIA HAD PEACE AND WAS BEING BUILT UP. AND WALKING IN THE FEAR OF THE LORD AND IN THE COMFORT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, IT MULTIPLIED. (ACTS 9:31, ESV)

When do you need comfort and where do you find it?

Looking in the wrong places for comfort gets us in a mess. If Bake Off or Match Of The Day have a bigger role in comforting us than the Holy Spirit, then Crown is not going to multiply. Lots of the problems around us stem from people looking for comfort from substances, sex, or salaries; all substitutes for God, and whenever we put other things where God should be, things unravel.

The Apostle Paul wasn’t too proud to admit that he needed comfort and he knew where to look for it, ‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.’

When Jesus promised his disciples that he would send Holy Spirit, he called him The Helper. The original word for ‘Helper’ was the Greek word for a soldier who fights back-to-back with you; it was a fairly big hint to his disciples that the mission he had in store for them wasn’t a safe one. Jesus had abuse and stones thrown at him after telling people about the kingdom of God. They were to follow in the footsteps of someone who was hated so much for his message that he was killed for it. They needed the comfort of the Holy Spirit to go places they’d never go on their own.

    Prayer Prompt

Life can be rough and the Christian life is a dangerous one. Ask for forgiveness for looking to other things for comfort; ask God to multiply Crown Church and to give you the necessary comfort and courage along the way.
